Corian is a resilient material that allows for small scratches and chips to be sanded out of your countertop. Cracks in Corian, however, are a different problem, one that most experts recommend leaving to a certified Corian repair specialist. It is possible to repair cracks in a Corian countertop yourself. This repair may not achieve a perfect color match like a professional service might, but it will prevent unsanitary dirt and bacteria from accumulating inside the crack.
- Lay a bag of ice on the countertop so that it covers the crack by 6 inches on each side. Leave the bag in place for approximately 45 minutes, which will slightly widen the crack.
- Use soap and warm water to thoroughly clean the crack and the surrounding counter top. Wipe the crack completely dry with a paper towel.
- Dip a cotton swab in hydrogen peroxide and clean inside the crack. The hydrogen peroxide will kill any bacteria inside the crack. Wipe the crack completely dry with a paper towel.
- Attach a 220-grit sandpaper disc to an orbital sander. Run the orbital sander at a low speed and delicately sand the edges and interior of the crack. Stop sanding when no raised or sharp edges remain. Remove any sanding dust from the crack with a moist paper towel, and then wipe the crack dry.
- Use a hair dryer to apply heat to the crack itself and an area that spans 6 inches on each side. Heat the area evenly for 20 minutes which will cause the crack to contract slightly.
- Epoxy seam sealer is packaged in two separate containers and they begin to bond when they are mixed together. Empty both epoxy seam sealer containers onto a paper plate and use a craft stick to mix them together.
- Use the craft stick to apply the epoxy to the crack until it is filled. Use the edge of the craft stick to scrape across the countertop, which will remove any excess epoxy and leave a flush surface. Wait the appropriate time for the epoxy to dry, as advised by the manufacturer's instructions.
- Attach a 320-grit sandpaper disc to an orbital sander and gently run it over the crack until the epoxy is flush with the countertop.
- Attach a 400-grit sandpaper disc to an orbital sander and run it over the crack two or three times to achieve a mirror-smooth finish.
- Clean the repaired countertop well before preparing food on it.
